became months ago with a strong bipartisan effort led by john mccain and ted kennedy, john mccain, kennedy and bush together. bush lobbyed hard, but the bill died anyway, died because of a huge back lash on the right. and leading that back lash were the rush limbaughs and the sean hannity's, and even this guy. >> american is run primarily by white christian men. and there is a segment of our population who hates that. despises that power structure. so they, under the guise of being compassionate want to flood the country with foreign nationals, unlimited, unlimited. to change the complexion, pardon the pun, of america. >> that was nearly six years, and another president in his second term is trying yet again to get the legislative branch to pass an immigration bill. >> send me a comprehensive immigration reform bill in the next few months and i will sign it right away. and america will be better for it. let's get it done. let's get it done. >> and again, there has been bipartisan support at the beginning, marco rubio, and john mccain on it. among others. and yet again, though, the
with eleanor about the opposition to the nominee john hhagel. here is senator john mccain on "meet the press." >> we feel he will have the votes to be confirmed as the secretary of defense. i don't intend to give those up when other senators continue to have reasonable questions. i mean reasonable. >> you are not a yes vote for your old friend? >> no, i don't believe he is qualified. i don't believe we should hold up his nomination any further. >> can you tell me what is going on here, eleanor with this? we have a week delay and probably going to be confirmed. >> senator hagel supported barack obama over john mccain. i think it is very personal with mccain. i think with other republicans, they are looking ahead to the 2014 races and they don't want to be primaried from the right. they have to look tough here. in the end, they are saying he will get through. he will get through without perhaps any republican votes or a handful of republican votes. i don't think that say very good message to send to the rest of the world the politics the republicans are playing in this. mccain, he wants to hav
republicans stephanie. stephanie: well played, sir. go ahead. john mccain. >> i think that that is a sufficient period of time to get answers to outstanding questions and i think that senator hagel after that period of time deserves a vote and a up or down vote on his nomination. stephanie: he was calling the white house's answers on benghazi satisfactory now. he said he's ready to find a way to end the filibuster holding up the nomination, but now is trying to get answers to questions posed by senator ted across. you pointed out that douche regarding hagels sources of income which he's going to throw might be north korea. >> have you ever been an agent of iron, north korea or mars. stephanie: this is how ridiculous they've gotten, they want to investigate an employee in hagel's office that reportedly sexually harassed another employee that hagel had nothing to do with. >> like ben gas yea which he had nothing to do with. 14 years ago this week, bill clinton was acquitted by the u.s. senate on his impeachment trial. only one of they say congressman ever made it to the

-scale blizzard. john mccain probably would have preferred to have been on the golf course. he was at a town hall meeting yesterday. he was for immigration when president bush was in the white house. when he was against immigration reform under president obama. the first term. now, he's back and for immigration reform. his constituents weren't too happy. one of them challenging him about why they don't build a fence. >> build a dang fence. where's the fence? >> in case you missed it, i showed you -- >> that's not a fence. >> that's not a fence. it is a banana. we're putting up a banana. about $600 million worth of appropriations that we have. >> bill: mccain has gotten so grumpy. when he ran for president in 2000, at those town hall meetings, i covered him in new hampshire. i traveled on that bus with him. he was so good at those town hall meetings. he was on top of it. people challenged him and he always had a good answer. little sense of humor. >> it's not a fence. it's a banana. >> that's one way to handle it, i guess. >> bill: stick it in your ear. cindy here to start off the hour. little bit

the whole thing. >> please do. stephanie: last week, john mccain was all elder states man-y. that was his policy last week. respecting the penalty's prerogative in making nominations role and advicing consent, blocking nomination is just not done. it's just not done. >> hmm ok. stephanie: now after saying just days ago they should not filibuster mccain said he hasn't made his mind up. he appears to be aligning himself with his closest little buddy, lindsey graham. they are so gilligan and the captain, those two. who had been demanding more information on benghazi, which he has nothing to do with. >> they're more like thurston h. oh well and lovie. stephanie: benghazi is cat nip to the tea baggers and he's trying to keep him from getting primary challenged in 2014. that's what that's about. >> huh? >> how did your little plan go to get susan rice? how did that go? [ laughter ] stephanie: that blowed up real good. >> let me just say benghazi, benghazi benghazi. >> this is the first time in the history of our country that a presidential nominee for secretary of defense has been dill busted.
to be confirmed. one thing that's interesting, john mccain, remember, has said that he believes chuck hagel will be confirmed ultimately. john mccain, by the way, was not one of those senators who wrote that letter to the white house asking the president to withdraw chuck hagel's nomination. >> kristen welker e thanks so much with you and we'll check back with you later in the show. >> sounds good. >>> after nearly 40 years in public office, defense secretary leon panetta may have thought he'd be retired by now, but he thought wrong. panetta is still on the job. at a nato brussels in conference, a conference that was supposed to be intended by former senator chuck hagel. hagel has not taken the mantel as they blocked him heading out to recess. mallika henderson, political reporter at "the washington post" and john stanton, washington bureau chief, thank you both for being here. >> john, i want to start with you. citing panetta is not the man that the audience thought they'd be hearing from. does washington's ability portray any weakness to the international community? >> i don't know if it'

cabinet nominees are going to be filibustered. john mccain has been pushing that line, but what he has been pushing is not true. republicans in fact broke this rule and broke precedent for nothing, and there is no sign yet that even they know why. just amazing. before we go, one update on our breaking news on the primary election in chicago. that just happened tonight. this is the election to replace jesse jackson jr. in congress >>> tonight, washington prepares us. how can nothing be the biggest news of the day? >> so what happens if this sequester kicks in. >> sequestration equals unemployment. >> fear not, congress is back to work. >> i don't sense a lot of urgency. >> we have moved the bill in the house twice. we should not have to move a third bill before the senate gets off their ass, before the senate gets off their ass. >> in the quote of the day. >> the republican leadership says what would pass bills next year. >> we should not have to move a third bill. >> there is no house bill. >> that was a different congress. >> with this congress. >> get the job done. >> this is a chanc

his friend and republican colleague john mccain. was there something personal there? >> there is always something personal in relationships between senators and chuck hagel is a former senator. i can't speculate on motives of each of the senators. they are probably different motives, an array of intent and purpose. i think there will be a vote this week in the committee, if not this week, next week, but soon. i believe there will be republican votes for senator hagel and if not in committee, at least on the floor. i believe he will be approved. i think the personal issues, hopefully, will be put behind us. most importantly, it will be a bipartisan vote. whatever the motives on a personal level, i hope partisanship is not part of this process as the american people watching that hearing may have concluded it was because the weight of the republican questioning, the prosecuting or crass examination aspect was so much on the republican side. >> do you agree with the old tradition that president's should be able to pick their own cabinet, choose the people with whom they
